Polish poet, editor, and translator. Husband of Wislawa Szymborska. He took part in the September 1939 campaign as a volunteer. During the occupation, he was active in the cultural underground, in the years 1943 to 1945 he was the editor of the "Poetry Library." After the war, he was an editor in the Krakow press, including in "Dziennik Polski," and in the years (1953–1954) editor of "Dziennik Literacki." In 1948 he married Wisława Szymborska they lived in the House of Writers at ul. Krupnicza 22 in Krakow. The marriage ended in divorce in 1954, but they maintained friendly relations. Under his influence, Wisława Szymborska followed the communist worldview for several years, and in 1950 she joined the Polish United Workers' Party. In 1953, he signed a resolution of the Polish People's Union on the Krakow trial. He left the party in 1957 and Szymborska in 1966.
