5033 Private B Thomas, 2nd Battalion the Worcestershire Regiment. The Battalion deployed to South Africa for the Second Anglo Boer War, sailing on the Tintagel Castle on 16 Dec 1899, and arrived at the Cape on 8 Jan 1900. Along with the 2nd Bedfordshire, 1st Royal Irish Regiment, and 2nd Wiltshire, they formed the 12th Brigade under Major General Clements. They were sent to the Colesberg - Naauwpoort district in the Cape Colony. They were heavily attacked on 12 and 15 Feb 1900 (Colonel Coningham and 17, 35 wounded and 14 taken prisoner). They joined the main army advance to Pretoria and were involved in the operations surrounding and the surrender of Prinsloo. The battalion accompanied General Clements to the Megaliesberg, north-west of Pretoria, concentrating at Commando Nek, clearing and bringing under control the Rustenburg-Krugersdorp district. Private Thomas died of disease at 39 Stationary Hospital, Rietfontein West, Pretoria, Transvaal.
