Boyd Clare Crawford, 90, passed away at Kalkaska Long Term Care on Nov. 12, 2013. Boyd was born to Irving and Nathalie (Liskum) Crawford on Jan. 3, 1923 at the family homestead in South Arm Township, Charlevoix County. Boyd attended East Jordan Schools and then joined the US Army serving in WWII, 10th Mountain Division. He was awarded the European African Middle East Campaign Ribbon with two stars, Combat Infantryman Badge, the Bronze Star and the Purple Heart. Boyd worked driving truck at the East Jordan Co-op. The family then moved to Kalkaska in 1953, operating the "Crawford Country Store" at the intersection of US 131 and M 72. They also built the Laundromat next door. Boyd was united in marriage to Virginia (Peters) on May 10, 1940 in East Jordan. They had four children; Clare, Marvin, Shirley and Rex. Virginia passed away on Nov. 22, 1971. Boyd married Mabel (Fessenden-Deater) on Oct. 1, 1972. She passed away on Dec. 8, 2010. He was preceded in death by his parents, his wives, sons and daughter; brothers: Russell, Basil, and Versal; and sister Audrey Gagnon. He is survived by his daughter-in-law, Michaeline Crawford of Rapid City; grandchildren, Mary (David) Moore and Matthew Crawford of Kalkaska, Monica Crawford of South Boardman, Charlotte (Joel) Martin of Whitehall; great-grandchildren, Sarah and Evan Moore, Reyann and Trace Homan and Josh Kiminski; step-children, James (Sharon) Deater of Rapid City, Janette (Tom) Brouwer of Kalkaska, Gary (Mary) Deater of Lebanon, Ind. and Louann Ferguson of Lansing. Memorials may be directed to the Kalkaska Senior Center. Funeral services were held on Friday, Nov. 15 at Kalkaska Funeral Home, with Pastor Dan Johnson officiating. Burial took place at Evergreen Cemetery. Arrangements were entrusted to Kalkaska Funeral Home and Cremation Services.
