Professional Football Player. After graduating from Cuero High School, Gerald Craft Weatherly went to Rice Institute (now Rice University). He was taken in the 8th round of the NFL draft by the Chicago Bears in 1949. He was a linebacker for four years with the Bears in 1950 and 1952 to 1954. He only played six games for the Bears in 1950 before being drafted into the Army. While stationed at Fort Sam Houston, he was named All Army while playing on their service team. An injury forced his retirement. He intercepted eight passes during his 35-game pro career, running them back for a total of 140 yards. He scored three touchdowns. He was inducted into the Rice Athletic Hall of Fame in 1974.
