Son of John McKissack I and Rebecca Elizabeth Simmons

John McKissack Jr. was born about 1745 in Edgecombe County, North Carolina, a son of John McKissick III. Granville County was created in 1746 from part of Edgecombe County. Around 1764, John married Mary Jane Hudson. They were living in Granville County at the time of the American Revolutionary War, where his father provided services to the Continental Army. In May of 1775 news arrived in North Carolina of the Battles of Lexington and Concord. War with Great Britain had begun.

Caswell County was created in 1777 from a portion of Granville County. In 1778 the family resided on 308 acres along Double Creek or Hico Creek in Caswell Co, NC. John moved his large family to Franklin in western North Carolina in the 1780's. This area would later be in Tennessee after 1796. (State of Franklin)

John moved his family from Franklin to Hancock County, Georgia by 1793. Between 1799 and 1805 John moved his family to nearby Greene County, Georgia. John was a drawer in the 1805 Georgia Land Lottery, but was not a winner, however, he moved to the area of the new county of Putnam on the Georgia frontier, created in December of 1807 from Baldwin County. John died June 1, 1815, and is buried in the Pine Grove Cemetery, in Eatonton.

Will of John McKissack Putnam County Georgia

John McKissack's will states, "I give and bequeath to my loving wife Jane McKisic my bay mare once owned by Irkurth with all the effects in my possession which came by her and half dozen pewter plates all of which to forever to remain her own also she must have fifty acres tenable land, ten acres cleared with a cabin thereon well fixed to live in and Lucinda to wait on her, both of which (the land and negro) to remain in her possession during her life or widowhood, then to be sold and equally divided between all my children; she also must have a sow and pigs and provisions, corn and pork sufficient enough to last her the first year."

John's 1815 will list 11 children. The four girls are referred to by their married names -- Nancy Allen, Polly Pennington, Elizabeth Breeding, and Lucy Stewart. It appears that the seven sons -- James, William, Duncan, Jonathan, Thomas, Archibald, and John -- were also of legal age. John Sr's will refer to Jonathan's orphans; we know that Jonathan was deceased from North Carolina records. Records for the May court session of 1813 in Person County, North Carolina contain an inventory of the estate of Jonathan McKissack as well as he still owned land there. John had amassed a respectable estate in his lifetime in Georgia and North Carolina.
