1394 Private E Cleaver, 1st Battalion the Royal Scots (Lothian Regiment). The battalion deployed to South Africa for the Second Anglo Boer War, and on arrival were placed under Sir William F Gatacre in the Queenstown district with the 2nd Northumberland Fusiliers, 2nd Royal Irish Rifles, and part of the Berkshire Regiment. They took part in the relief of Wepener and were in action around Wakkerstroom, in the Dewetsdorp neighbourhood 22-24 Apr 1900. They remained in the south-east of the Orange Free State for some time. By 25 Aug 1900 the battalion, about 1250 strong, was concentrated at Belfast. They arrived in time to be of some assistance in the fighting which preceded the battle of Bergendal on the 27 Aug 1900. On 8 Sep 1900 the were part of an attack on a main Boer position near Lydenburg. In Sep 1900 they marched to Koomati Poort where they remained for some time. On 8 Dec 1900 Private Cleaver was part of a column of 1500 men, 9 cannons and over 100 wagons as they camped at Nooitgedacht, 3 miles NW of Hekpoort, west of Pretoria. On 13 Dec 1900 they were attacked by a Boer force of about 1500 men under Generals Koos de la Rey and Christiaan Beyers. Four companies of the Northumberland Fusiliers were holding the ridges overlooking the camp. Beyers attacked the ridges with 4 of the 6 commandos, killing or capturing the Fusiliers, before turning on the main encampment. The Boers looted the stores before being driven off. Private Cleaver was wounded accidentally during the attack and died of his wounds the same day. He was buried on the battlefield. His remains were later reinterred at Krugersdorp. He is also commemorated on the Royal Scots Boer War memorial in St Giles' Cathedral, Royal Mile, Edinburgh, Scotland (see: https://www.warmemorialsonline.org.uk/memorial/132882/).
