Alexander Hay married Janet Allan Hay in 1855 in Bannockburn, Scotland. He worked for several years managing a tannery in Edinburgh. He moved to New Orleans, Louisiana in the mid 1860s and founded his own firm that bought and sold hides. This business was successful, and he lived in New Orleans for many years, traveling home to Scotland during the summers to sail his yacht. His daughter Jessie was Queen of Carnival (Mardi Gras) in 1878. By 1879, he moved his family back to Scotland for unknown reasons, and later moved to England to be near his son Thomas Dalrymple Hay and his family.
