This grave includes three generations of the Rainford family, beginning with patriarch Richard Rainford (1811-1879) and his wife Mary Unsworth (1811-1889). Richard and Mary were married in 1833 and together had four children, James (b. 1837), Louisa (1839-59), Priscilla and Theresa. Richard initially worked in the silk industry as an overlooker of power looms. By 1861, however, he and his family had moved from Leigh to Eccles, where Richard began working as a greengrocer. After Richard's death in 1879, his widow Mary took over the grocery at 112 Church Street.
Also buried in this grave are two of Richard and Mary's four children. The first was Priscilla, who had once worked in the cotton mills but left to help her mother run the grocery. She died unmarried in 1890. The second daughter buried in the grave is Teresa, who, in 1868, married joiner and carpenter, John Delve. Teresa and John had at least five children: Mary Elizabeth Scarry (1869-1923), John (1871-1940), William (b. 1876), Teresa (1881-1959), Harold (1883-1966) and Leonard (1885-1956), all born in Eccles. Their two eldest children, Mary Elizabeth and John, are buried in this grave.
