One of the oldest inhabitants of Western New York was brought to Warsaw and buried beside her husband, Dr. Charles A. Dake in the Warsaw cemetery. Had Mrs. Dake lived until January 1st, she would have been 105 years old. Born in Saratoga Springs and at an early age came with her parents to Portage, Livingston county, where they made their home in a little log cabin. She remembered that during that journey there was trouble with the Indians, but none of them were injured. She was the one person living that had seen Mary Jemison, the White Woman of the Genesee. She would have been 12 years old at the time Mary Jemison left her home at Gardeau, for the Buffalo reservation. That was in 1833. Her maiden name was Miss Maria Roberts and when only a young woman she married Dr. Charles A. Dake, said to be the 1st homeopathic physician in Wyoming County. For a time he practiced his profession in Portageville and in 1850 they moved to Warsaw where they lived and labored for 17 years when they went to Irondequoit, where the Dr. continued his practice until his death about 20 years ago. It was their home that gave that part of Summerville, where they lived, the name of Dake's Corners. Until recently, Mrs. Dake had been very active about the home caring for her own room and taking an interest in the welfare of those around her. She had failed in health, however, since the death of her son, Reuben, with whom she made her home. Mrs. Dake lived through 4 wars in which this nation was engaged and in the larger two, the World War and the Civil War, she done relief work and contributed to the welfare of the soldiers.
