In 1949 Dorothy and her grandparents Robert and Pearl Hughes relocated to Fort
Lauderdale, Florida.
Once in Florida Dorothy attended Dillard High School and Sheridan Vocational Center in Hollywood, Florida where she graduated as a Licensed Practical Nurse. Dorothy met and married Mr. Eddie Willie Mitchell in Fort Lauderdale, Florida,
For many years Dorothy worked as a LPN at Broward General Medical Center, Plantation General and Florida Medical Center. Dorothy was a long-time servant of Jehovah God. If you knew Dorothy you knew that she was a fashionista. She will be remembered for her numerous hats, shoes, purses, maxi dresses and accessories. Her favorite color was mint green.
Dorothy was extremely talented, she taught herself to sew and became a professional seamstress. She also enjoyed knitting, crocheting and upholstery.In her spare time she could be found in thrift stores, reading and doing word puzzles.
On April 27, 2022 Dorothy Phillips Mitchell passed away peacefully. She is predeceased by: Her sister Joan Phillips Belton; Her brothers: Andrew Hughes and Matthew Phillips; Brother in law Arthur Belton; and Sister in law Josephine Hughes.
She leaves to mourn her precious memories: Her Husband Eddie Willie Mitchell; Her 9 children: Sharon Phillips Crum, Deborah Phillips, Beverly Phillips Turner (Melvin), Annette Mitchell Freeman (Charles), Jeffrey Mitchell, Regina Mitchell, Alvin Mitchell (Lakshia), Joy Mitchell and Corey Mitchell (Shalonda). 19 grandchildren: Shavona. Robert, Devin, Jerrett, Tekera, Makita, Chaz, Brandon, Darrell, Brittany, Jeffrey, Alvin, Kylia, Sophia, Alexis, Ashley, Melissa, Vince and Kenan. 19 great grandchildren: J'Nia, Robert Jr, Mayah, Rihana, Brenay, Darryl, Jade, Jayla, Nyla, Branndde, Aniya, Messiah, Jeffrey, Aurie, Shia, Sincere, Lauryn, Zion and Temeka.
