Evelyn McGavin Seymour passed away at the age of 97 on July 15, 2011, with family and friends at her side.
Evelyn was born Oct. 23, 1913, on a Pennsylvania farm in Auburn Center, the second of 12 children. Her parents were Thomas Phillip McGavin and Anna Loretta Conaty.
She attended St. Catherine's Nursing School in Brooklyn, N.Y, and graduated in 1935.
She married her second husband Thomas Edward Seymour in 1948 and moved to southern California. She was blessed with two children, Joseph E. and Anne Loretta. After Tom's death she remarried in 1956 and moved to Visalia, Calif., where she worked at the Welfare Department as the Medical Care Program Coordinator for a number of years.
She missed "working with the babies," though, so she returned to patient care nursing. She worked at Exeter Community, Kaweah Delta and Visalia Community hospitals. She retired in 1977 and moved to Diamond Springs, Calif., where she was an active member of the Grange and an avid square dancer.
Visiting her son and grandchildren in Washington and the McGavin Clan back east kept her traveling. In 1996, she moved to Arcata, Calif., to be near her daughter and her newest granddaughter, Camille Carlisle.
She became an active member of St. Mary's parish, Bayside Grange and a local retired nurses group.
Evelyn was the family's "sunshine gal." She remembered birthdays and anniversaries and sent a baby blanket for every birth in the family. As family matriarch she taught the McGavin history to her descendants, including stories from her own (often hilarious) past.
Survivors include her son, Joseph E. Seymour of Forks, Wash.; her daughter, Anne Seymour Carlisle of Arcata, Calif.; three granddaughters, Heidi Seymour Thornhill, Amity Seymour Hager and Camille Carlisle; one grandson, Gabe Myers; and eight great-grandchildren.
Evelyn was preceded in death by her husbands and six of her siblings.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be sent to St. Mary's School, Arcata, Calif., per Evelyn's request.
