4113 Private J Makin, 1st Battalion the Manchester Regiment. The battalion deployed to South Africa for the Second Anglo Boer War, sailing from Gibraltar and was in Natal by 7 Oct 1899. The battalion was moved up to Ladysmith, and was present with General French at the battle of Elandslaagte on 21 Oct 1899 (11 men killed & 31 wounded). The battalion was in Ladysmith throughout the siege, and on 6 Jan 1900 during the great attack, held Caesar's Camp against a determined assault (33 killed, 41 wounded). After the recuperation period following the relief of Ladysmith, the battalion was part of the force under General Buller that advanced north into the Transvaal to Lydenburg, and fought at the battle of Bergendal 21–27 Aug 1900. Private Makin was killed by lightning on 29 Nov 1900 at Schoemans Kloof, about 10 miles east of Badfontein.
