A Matrose, Kaiserliche Marine, serving aboard SMS Grief, a German cargo-ship converted into a merchant raider, he was taken prisoner as a result of a battle in the North Sea involving the armed merchant cruiser Alcantara on 29 February 1916, both ships ultimately being sunk. Unfortunately he died on board on 2 or 3 March 1916 and was buried at sea.
