May 28, 1921-Sept. 6, 2010. Beloved husband, father, grandfather, great and great-
great-grand-father, brother, uncle, "Papa" and "Big Al" to family and friends, died peacefully at the age of 89. He lived a long and rich life, touching many people with his kindness, charisma, and wry sense of humor. He will be remembered as a thoughtful, caring and generous man by the many people who had the good fortune to know him. Al, known as "Junior" when he was a young man, was born in 1921 in Westville, Illinois, the second of three children of Mary and Albert (Hap) DeVon. Growing up during the depression and being the son of a coal miner, Al learned at a young age to be industrious and to make his own luck. While working several different odd-jobs, through sheer determination and dogged persistence, he was hired by Illinois Bell Telephone Company as a service engineer, a position he held for only a short while before moving up through the ranks. After 32 years, Al retired from Illinois Bell, as District Commercial Manager in Arlington Heights, Illinois. Al was also a well-known community leader, serving as President of the North Lake County Community Chest (Waukegan, IL) and President of Kiwanis (Waukegan, IL and Arlington Heights, IL). Al grew up in Springfield, Illinois, where he met and married the first love of his life, Virginia (Collins) DeVon in 1942. They had four children during which time Al's career took the family from Springfield to Waukegan, Illinois, where he spent most of his working years. Following the untimely death of Virginia in 1971, and after retirement from Illinois Bell, Al made his own luck again when he met and married the second love of his life, Dorothy (Divers) DeVon in 1986. Al and Dorothy lived a short time in Hamilton, Ohio, before moving to Ormond Beach, Florida, where they had a beautiful home overlooking the Atlantic Ocean. Sadly, Dorothy passed away in 2003. Al stayed in Ormond Beach, living independently, where he had many dear friends, before moving to Libertyville, Illinois, in 2010, to be closer to his family. Al was a veteran of World War II, serving in the Army Air Corps from June, 1943 to December, 1945. He served in the CBI (China, Burma, India) "Theater of War" as an Aerial Engineer. Among many other awards and decorations, he was awarded both the Distinguished Flying Cross and the Air Medal. Al enjoyed being with people and everyone enjoyed being with him. He thrived in all types of company, making friends everywhere. Through his caring, gentle and good nature, Al made a difference in the lives of the many people who had the good fortune to know him. Al will be greatly missed by his four children, step-son and their spouses, Beverly (Gus) Petropolous, Albert (Holli) DeVon, Richard (Alicia) DeVon, Lynn (Jackie) DeVon and Tom (Rickie) Divers; his brother Jimmy DeVon; and his sister Marietta Kirkwood; nieces Margene, Judy and Phyllis; nephew, Jim Jr.; along with his six grandchildren, Kim, Tommy, Sophia, Erica, Paul, and Philip; and numerous great and great-great- grandchildren, (Noah, Zaccur, Angelique, Rick, Stacy, Jordie, Kelly, Kyle, Dino, Alyssa, Ashley, Josalyn, Jaalen, and Janai). He will also be missed by his many dear family and friends from Springfield, including sister-in-law, Wanda Soyers and her family, Waukegan, Ormond Beach and Hamilton. Funeral Mass will be 10:00 am on Saturday, September 11, 2010 at St. Joseph's Catholic Church, 121 E Maple Ave., Libertyville. Interment will be at Ascension Cemetery in Libertyville. Visitation will be from 9:15 am to time of mass at the church. Donations in his name may be made to a charity of your choice. Arangements are under the direction of THE MEMORIAL CHAPEL OF WAUKEGAN, 1521 Washington St., Waukegan, IL.
