William Lees and Priscilla Parks Family

William Lees was born in January 1870/71 in Derbyshire, England. When still a teenager, he joined the Army. A family story says that he went to India, and his military exit paperwork dated March 10, 1891 states that his service abroad time was for 2 years and 96 days. William was in the military for a total of 4 years and 220 days. This document also lists his complexion as fair, his eyes were light grey, hair color brown, and he was a tall man at 5 feet 11 3/4 inches.

Two years later, on May 7, 1893, William married Priscilla Parks in Darley, Derbyshire. William was 23 years old, while his new wife was listed as 21. Priscilla was the daughter of Benjamin Parks (a farmer) and Catharine Hoyland. Witnesses to the marriage were John Thomas Parks and Harriet Lees. Harriet Lees was William's only sister, and John Thomas Parks was Priscilla's older brother. The marriage registration form lists that like his father, William is working as a stone cutter. He worked at Stancliffe stone quarry.

To this union, three daughters were born:

1. Frances Edith May Lees, born February 16, 1898. Frances married Joseph Charles Green. Issue: 2 sons. She died in 1985, Sussex, England.

2. Laura Helen "Nellie" Lees, born July 16, 1900. She did not marry, instead Nellie hired herself out as a cook for the gentry. She was a marvelous cook. She died in June 1974, at Eastbourne, Sussex.

3. Lillian Lucy "Lily" Lees, born July 6, 1902/03. Lillian first married Charles Johnson, a bush driver. Her second husband was George Gunn. No issue. She died in 1975 in the Greater London area.

On the 1911 England Census, the family shows up as follows:

Priscilla Lees, age 39
Frances Lees, age 13
Laura Lees, age 10
Lilian Lees, age 8

Priscilla died in September 1932 and William followed her two years later on September 21, 1934. Per William's funeral card, he and Priscilla are interred at St. Helen's Church, Darley Dale.
