CHARLES DREW

Charles Drew, rancher at Little Basin Creek and former Butte miner, died Tuesday morning at the residence of his son-in-law and daughter, Mr. and Mrs. Robert Williams, 3251 S. Main St. He had been ill only a short time.

The body, is at the Richards Funeral Home, where friends may call beginning Wednesday afternoon. Funeral arrangements will be announced later.

Mr. Drew was born in Cornwall, England. He came to Butte in 1904 and engaged in mining for a considerable time, after which he turned to ranching.

He was widely known and respected among the Cornish in Butte. Twice he made trips back to Cornwall to visit his birthplace.

Among the surviving relatives besides the son-in-law and daughter are a son, Charles R. Drew of Little Basin Creek; sister, Mrs. Harriet Mellow of St. Austell, England; brothers-in-law, William Cayzer and William H. Tippett, both of Butte; sister-in-law, Delia Drew of Butte; grandchildren, Robert, Donald, Lily and Sandra Jean Williams and Mrs. Howard Matson, all of Butte; nephews, Charles and William Tippett of Butte; niece, Mrs. Ted Appell of Helena; great-grandson, Howard Roy Matson of Butte; stepchildren, Clarence Williams of Tacoma, Wash., and Mrs. George Lenhard of Seattle, and numerous nephews and nieces.

------
His 1912 marriage record indicates that Charles in the son of Richard Drew and Catherine Craddock. Charles first arrived at the Port of New York on 10 Jul 1904 on the S.s. Baltic. He later arrived from Liverpool, England arriving on 7 Aug 1908 at the Port of New York on the S.S. Cedric. The 1908 immigration record indicates that his father already was in the US while his mother still was in England. His 1921 naturalization record indicates that he was born 28 Feb 1883 in St Austell, England.

It appears that Charles was married at least three times.
(1) On 8 Apr 1912 in Silver Bow County, Charles married Ida Violet Tippett, daughter of William Tippett and Jessie Trestrail. Ida first married John Rowe Williams, and they had Clarence John Williams, b. 19 May 1907 in York, Ontario, Canada, and Violet, b. c1911 in Montana. During this time, Charles, Ida, Clarence, and Violet appear to have visited England, sailing back to the Port of New York from Southampton on the American ship "St. Paul," departing 17 Sep 1912. In that record as well as in the 1920 census, Clarence and Violet are listed as having the Drew surname. Charles and Ida had Doris Minnie, b. 12 Jan 1913, in Butte. Ida died 7 Sep 1920 in Butte.
(2) On 24 Jun 1922 in Butte, Montana, Charles married Dora Cheney, who was b. c1894 in Salmon, Idaho. Records suggest that this was Dora's third marriage. First, she married John L. Chaffin on 21 Nov 1911 in Lemhi County, Idaho; on May 23, 1912, they had a daughter, who is not named in the birth record and may have died shortly after being born. On 11 May 1912, John was imprisoned for burglary in Lemhi County, and they appear to have divorced. Next, Dora married Alfred Arthur Patterson, and they had three daughters, ll born in Butte, Montana: Bertha Adeline, b. 6 Oct 1915; Sementha, b. 6 Nov, 1916; and Gertrude Dorthy (sic), b. 17 Nov 1918, d. 1 Mar 1920 of pneumonia following influenza (during the Spanish Flu pandemic of 1918-1920). Alfred Patterson died 30 Oct 1919. On 23 Apr 1923 in Butte, Montana, Charles and Dora had a son, Charles Richard Drew. On The 1930 census lists Bertha Patterson as Bertha Drew, in the home of Charles and Dora, along with Doris, daughter of Charles and Ida, and Richard C. [Charles Richard Drew]. After the 1930 census, Dora appears to disappear from all records. Charles' 1933 marriage license indicates that he is divorced, so it is possible that she still was living.
(3) The Montana Standard (Butte, Montana) issued 30 May 1933 announced that a marriage license was issued to Charles Drew and Mary Maud Hoskins (sic). County records indicate they married 29 May in Butte. Maud is the daughter of Jacob B. Trethaway and Elizabeth Ann Floyd and widow of Thomas John Hoskin (1879-1925).

------
The Montana Standard, 8 Oct 1946, indicates that Charles Drew was a former employee of Anaconda Copper Mining Company and settled his ranch on Little Basin Creek about 7 1/2 miles south of Butte in 1913.

The Anaconda Standard (Anaconda, Montana) reported that Richard Drew, brother of John, Charles, and Henry, all of Butte, died 15 Apr 1923. Various sources indicate that William John Drew died 8 Apr 1939 in Butte, and Henry Drew died 29 Oct 1942 in Butte. Charles and William John also are buried in Mount Moriah Cemetery.
