Dorothy was the second of ten children and the oldest daughter. She attended Shickshinny High School, and she married William R. Badman on December 25, 1941 in Slocum Township, Luzerne County, Pennsylvania. The couple raised three daughters. Her second husband was Oliver Force.

She was employed by Baronal Industry in Berwick, Columbia County, Pennsylvania, as a presser. She was a member of the Slocum Township Fire Company Ladies' Auxiliary, and was a former Girl Scout leader. She was a quilter for over 50 years and completed more than 200 hand-made quilts.
