Musician. Born and raised in Glasgow, and his music career began in 1964 when he and two school friends formed a folksinging group named The Cumberland Three. Shortly thereafter however in the summer of 1965 he immigrated here, to the United States, and, having enlisted in the U.S. Army as a permanent resident, he was heard singing in a military talent show and therefrom invited to join the Third Army Touring Shows. Following his time in the army he continued to pursue a professional career in folk singing, and while appearing at the Bob Burns Restaurant in Woodland Hills in 1983 the Scottish Society of Los Angeles invited him to play at its annual festival. From that came his first L.P. and opportunities to appear at several other festivals and Scottish games in California and around the country for which he eventually became best known. And in 1996 he instituted annual tours of Scotland as well. In 2011 after returning from Scotland he incurred a very serious accident at home which left him paralyzed from the neck down, and over the past eleven years he suffered from multiple bouts of pneumonia and cancer. Alex has requested that his ashes be brought to Scotland and that there be no funeral or memorial and that everyone should remember him as he was when last seen.
