Rufus Johnson was born enslaved in 1846 to John "Jack" Johnson and Carolina Johnson in Alabama.

In 1856, Rufus was valued at $666.00 at the age of 10 years and inherited by his deceased slaveowner's daughter Elizabeth "Adeline" Price. Before Christmas on December 20, 1856, Rufus was taken from his family and put on a ship from the Port of Mobile to the Port of New Orleans.

On New Year's Eve in 1856 he was carried with two other slaves by Cuthbert Lewis Price (husband of Adeline) from the Port of New Orleans to the Port of Galveston, Texas traveling to Price's Mountain in Palestine, Texas. In the new year of 1857, Rufus woke up without the love of his family in an unknown place.

Rufus was never seen or heard of by his family since the day he left. No information is known if he married or had children or not.

He was the Son of John "Jack" Johnson and Carolina Johnson; and the Brother of Henry Johnson, Caroline Johnson Gully, Francis Marion "Frank" Johnson, William "Will" Johnson, Savannah Johnson Reed, Sallie Johnson Reed, Jane Johnson Turner, Mary Johnson Blackwell, Priscilla "Silla" Johnson Nicholson Lampley, Johnnie Edward Johnson, Georgia "Carline" Johnson Perryman, Emma "Viola" Johnson Cole, James Washington Johnson, Matthew Theophilus Johnson, Louvenia "Lizzie" Johnson Shields, Everette C. Johnson, Bessie Johnson Hathorn, George Haynes Johnson, and Ruth Johnson Riddle Taylor Moore.
