Emma "Viola" Johnson Cole was born in 1877 to John "Jack" Johnson and Hettie Brown.

She married Joseph W. Cole, who operated a grocery store in Meridian, Mississippi. They did not have any children. Although according to oral history, Viola conceived a child in her teens and her mother, Hettie, raised Ruth as her own child.

She died May 27, 1932 at the age of 55.

She was the Wife of Joseph W. Cole; the Daughter of John "Jack" Johnson and Hettie Brown; and the Sister of Henry Johnson, Caroline Johnson Gully, Rufus Johnson, Francis Marion "Frank" Johnson, William "Will" Johnson, Savannah Johnson Reed, Sallie Johnson Reed, Jane Johnson Turner, Mary Johnson Blackwell, Priscilla "Silla" Johnson Nicholson Lampley, Johnnie Edward Johnson, Georgia "Carline" Johnson Perryman, James Washington Johnson, Matthew Theophilus Johnson, Louvenia "Lizzie" Johnson Shields, Everette C.
