Martha was the wife of Nicholas James, Sr. who she married ca. 1808 in Tennessee. Together, from that time until ca. 1830, they bore as many as ten children-- probably in Grainger Co. Tennessee. By 1832, Nicholas & Martha moved their family to Shelby County, Indiana where they had two more children. Nicholas died there in 1839. Martha, a widow with several small children, never remarried. In her later years, she remained close to her youngest daughter, Martha Jane Dodds, wife of Isaac, traveling with them to Illinois, and finally settling in Nebraska.
NOTE: It should be noted that Martha's former name may be HEWELL, but that is yet to be confirmed. Research ongoing and is a working hypothesis. If anyone has further information, proof or confirmation of that or other name, please contact me.
