Fred Harness, 83, of Cordell Road, died Wednesday, September 12, 2001, at the Scott County Hospital. Born in the Bull Creek community on July 4, 1918, he was preceded in death by his parents, Jasper and Martha Lawson Smithers Harness; two daughters, Gussie Lee and Marilyn Harness; one son, Jimmy Dean Harness; two half brothers, Arlie and Hugh L. Smithers; and two half sisters, Artency Harness and Artiemency Smithers. He was a member of Bull Creek Baptist Church. He is survived by his wife, Etta Mae Harness; eight children: Willis Harness and wife, Lodena, of Pioneer; Oma Morgan and husband, George; Floyd Harness; Alma Newport and husband, Donald; and Janie Webb, all of Dalton, Ga.; Sheila Wright and husband, Rev. J.D., of Soddy Daisey; Dora Easley and husband, Bob, of Ellijay, Ga.; and Devon Harness and wife, Pauletta, of Winona; 24 grandchildren, 21 great-grandchildren, and several nieces, nephews and many other relatives. Funeral services were conducted September 14, 2001, at Bull Creek Baptist Church with Rev. Edmond Lowe and Rev. Carlie Duncan officiating. Music was provided by the Mason Family. Interment followed in Bull Creek Cemetery. Four Oaks Funeral Home of Huntsville was in charge of arrangements. (Source: The Independent Herald, 20 Sep 2001, p14)
