"Two men look through the same prison bars. One sees mud the other sees stars"

Gina Tripp Hollenbeck of Collierville, Tenn., died on Sunday, June 12, 2022, after a courageous seven-year battle with lung cancer. She was 45.

Gina was a dedicated mother, wife and friend – a bright light who attracted all who knew her. She finished her race with unwavering hope and grace, and a fervent pursuit of life
She was a nurse, and dedicated her career to caring for women and their babies, first as a labor and delivery nurse at Baptist Memorial Memphis and later as the clinical director of Life Choices of Memphis, where she continued to compassionately serve women and their children.

In her church, she mentored dozens of teenage girls with that same faith, helping them discover an authentic faith and relationship with Christ.

When she was diagnosed with Stage 4 ALK positive lung cancer at age 38, she began her next career, advocating for genomic biomarker testing for all lung cancer patients and securing additional research funding for her disease. A non-smoker who exercised regularly, Gina reminded others often that "anyone with lungs can get lung cancer."

She served as president of the national ALK Positive Inc. group, a patient-driven advocacy group dedicated to improving life expectancy for ALK-positive cancer patients. Under her leadership, ALK Positive Inc. convinced the American Cancer Society and National Lung Cancer Society to advocate with biomarker testing for lung cancer that personalized treatment for each patient. Today, biomarker testing for lung cancer is the standard in nine states.

Her legacy will shine as bright as the stars that she so fervently fought for, as she reminded those around her that they always had a choice in perspective. "Mud or Stars?" she asked. You get to choose. Gina always chose stars.

Gina is survived by her husband, Greg Hollenbeck; her sons, Hudson and Hayden; her mother Sharon "Sue" Tripp of Bartlett; her father Robert (Teresa) Tripp of San Antonio, Texas; and in-laws and several nieces and nephews.

A celebration of life will be held on Tuesday, June 21, 2022, at Grace Valley Church, 10576 Collierville Road, Collierville, Tenn. Visitation will be held from 11 a.m.-1 p.m., followed by a celebration of life service at 1 p.m. The celebration of life service will be available to watch via live stream at https://vimeo.com/event/2210019.

Nellann Mettee liked Erin Prather's post: "This morning, I received news that our beautiful Gina went on to be with Jesus. This incredible woman fought stage 4 lung cancer fearlessly for the last 7 years. She has never smoked a day in her life. While being dealt this card seemed so unfair, Gina never stopped smiling. She took her diagnosis by the horns and chose to make it her mission to help others who were fighting this horrible cancer right alongside her. She changed so many people's lives and inspired all who knew her with her positivity and devout faith in God. Her Army has prayed fervently all these years for her healing, in the way us humans would define "healing." Earlier today it dawned on me that God indeed answered those prayers. He healed her in the most perfect and beautiful way possible. She is now TRULY living. My sweet Gina… you are my hero in SO many ways. I praise God for the unique and special relationship we shared. Thank you for being the mother, wife, friend, Christian, and the all-around strongest and most amazing woman that you were. I have always wanted to be like you. For the remainder of my life, I promise to always see stars over mud. And now, you have ALL the stars! "
