Walter J. Gammon, 98 of Henrico, passed away on July 10, 2023. He was
preceded in death by his loving wife of 66 years, Irene Satchell
Gammon. He was the last surviving of 15 children born to Walter Ashby
Gammon and Cordie Sue Gammon. He is survived by his two daughters,
Donna G. Sloan (Geoffrey D. Sloan, M.D.) and Carol G. Rock; grandsons,
Bryan Sloan and James Sloan; granddaughter, Mary Michelle Sloan; great
grandson, Landon; and many nieces and nephews. Walter was a member of
Lakeside United Methodist Church and the Metropolitan Lodge #11 AF&AM.
He was the last naval survivor on the U.S.S Hoel and sister ship U.S.S
Johnston of Leyte Gulf, the largest naval battle of World War II. He
was awarded the U.S Presidential Unit Citation and the Philippine
Republic Presidential Unit Citation Badge. Mr. Gammon was featured on
Hometown Heros, April 8, 2021 on CBS television; he is also pictured
in the book Last of the TinCan Sailors. A funeral service will be held
2 p.m., Thursday July, 13, 2023 at Lakeside United Methodist Church,
2333 Hilliard Rd, Richmond, Va 23228. The family will receive friends
starting at 1 p.m. Interment will be held at a later date. In lieu of
flowers, please make memorial contributions to The Children's Hospital
of Richmond or Lakeside United Methodist Church.
