During World War II, Helen worked in defense plants located in Baltimore, Md., and Sidney, N.Y. After the war, she worked for a time as a New York telephone operator.
She married Willis C. Horth on Feb. 2, 1947. Her husband passed away on May 25, 2012. Helen was a mother and homemaker living in the town of Laurens for over 60 years. After her son went off to college, Helen returned to work as a proofreader for many years with the Oneonta Star.
Besides Helen's husband, she was predeceased by sister Neva McMyne and brothers, Harold and Edwin McMyne. Surviving is her son, Willis James Horth of Clinton and his girlfriend, Elizabeth Kean, of Rome. She is also survived by two gentleman she considered her "sons" and their wives, Russell and Sue Steenrod of Merrimack, N.H., and Walter and Dona Steenrod of Jonesborough, Tenn., and two other gentleman who called her "grandmother," Garland Mallette of Laurens and Brian Greene of Dannemora.
The family would like to thank the Heritage nurses and CNAs, especially Sue, Candy, Ruby, Tina and Pam, for the gentle and loving care she received.
Calling hours will be from 1 to 2 p.m. Tuesday, April 14, 2015, in the Bookhout Funeral Home, 357 Main St, Oneonta. Funeral services will immediately follow at 2 p.m. with the Reverend Mel Farmer, pastor of the River Street Baptist Church officiating. Burial will be held at a later date at the Glenwood Cemetery, Oneonta.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to a charity of choice in her name.
