4046 Lance Corporal G (or F) Hunter, 8th (The King's Royal Irish) Hussars. The regiment deployed to South Africa for the Second Anglo Boer War, sailing in Feb 1900, and arrived in South Africa in the beginning of Mar 1900. Along with the 7th Dragoon Guards and the 14th Hussars they formed the 4th Cavalry Brigade under Brigadier General Dickson. They joined the main army advance to Bloemfontein and Pretoria with several engagements including action at Hout Nek on 1 May 1900. Lance Corporal Hunter died of disease at Bloemfontein on 7 Jun 1900. He is also commemorated on the 8th (The King's Royal Irish) Hussars Boer War memorial in St Patrick's Cathedral, St Patrick's Close, Dublin, Ireland (see: http://www.irishwarmemorials.ie/Memorials-Detail?memoId=417).
