Ms. Elizabeth Chambers Mathis, age 88, of Rome, GA, passed away on Saturday, July 2, 2022, at a hospice care facility in Lafayette, GA.
Ms. Mathis was born in Rome, GA, on August 15, 1933, daughter of the late Paul Chambers, Sr., and the late Estelle Hice Chambers. She was also preceded in death by her husband, Warren Audie Mathis, by a son, Mike Mathis, by her grandson, Eric Mathis, by 2 sisters, Lois Heard and Mildred Williams, and by 3 brothers, Wesley Chambers, Ernest Chambers and Paul Chambers, Jr. Ms. Mathis was a member of Sherwood Forest Baptist Church.
Elizabeth's employment consisted of Floyd Medical Center, University of Florida, and retiring from City of Rome Water Department, secretary to Billy Baker. She was friendly and outgoing, plus being a private person. Most people did not know how talented she was in writing. She also was a decorator with a flair for the unusual and unique. She loved gospel singing, having singings in her home on Sunday afternoons. She felt like she was special to God, and she knew for sure He was special to her. She and Malcom Talley did tours together for several years followed each year by a party for the tourists. Games and plays were written by Elizabeth for the parties. Examples, "Picking Cotton under the Table" and "Who killed Baby Liz?" She and Audie traveled the States numerous times, also England twice, France, Scotland, Bermuda, and Italy with Discount Tire Dealers. Until Audie's illness, they had a condo, then a house in Ft. Meyers, FL, staying there in the winter. Some of her best friends were made there.
Survivors include her 2 children; twin granddaughters; her best friend; a special nephew; friend, Jack Norwood; nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be held at 2pm on Friday, July 8, 2022, in the Chapel at Henderson & Sons Funeral Home, South Chapel, with the Rev. Ricky Studdard officiating and Malcom Talley and Mary Nell Foss delivering eulogies. Interment will follow in East View Cemetery.
