AMBROZIJ BONDARCZUK, BORN: OCT 09, 1920, DATE OF PASSING: JAN 19, 2001

Peacefully, in his sleep, Ambrozij Bondarczuk passed away on the day of Epiphany, January 19, 2001 to join his beloved wife, Kateryna, who predeceased him on August 22, 2000, leaving him yearning to be by her side.

Mourning his death are his daughter and daughter with their partners / spouses, two grandchildren, as well as a niece and nephew in Ukraine.

His parents and brother Myhailo predeceased him.

Ambrozij was born October 9, 1920 in the selo Tushebin, rayon Mlyniw, oblast Rivno, Volyn, Ukraine. Raised on a dairy farm, he later apprenticed to be a tailor until the Second World War disrupted his life. A fervent Ukrainian nationalist, Ambrozij enlisted into the Ukrainian Insurgent Army - UPA, risking his life for an independent Ukraine.

Taken as a POW in 1945 and held in captivity until the arrival of allied forces, he remained in a Displaced Persons camp at Dorsten, Germany, where he met and married his soul mate Kateryna in 1946. They arrived in Canada in 1950 to embark on a new life in a foreign land.

Ambrozij always considered Ukraine his mother and Canada his stepmother; a very good and kind stepmother. Upon arriving to Canada, Ambrozij worked as a logger for 25 cents an hour. Eventually he returned to Winnipeg, where he was employed with Olympic Sportswear for 34 years.

He was a very gifted and talented individual who was able to excel at anything he put his mind to, often being described as having golden hands. He particularly loved the arts, especially acting and singing; these were his passion. Ambrozij was a member of St. Mary The Protectress Church - Sobor Choir, where he proudly sang solos, rarely missing a Sunday liturgy; he was also one of the founding members of the Institute Prosvita-Dumka choir.

Ambrozij was an enthusiastic participant in the Ukrainian Theatre community. One role he cherished portraying was that of St. Nicholas, which he skillfully performed every Christmas for over 40 years, delighting many generations of children at Sobor. He even participated in an episode that focused on Ukrainian woodworking or rizba on TV's Sesame St. along with his grandchildren.

Ambrozij worked tirelessly to provide for all of his family's material needs. He devoted his whole life to his wife of 55 years and to his children; in whom he nurtured a love and respect for Ukraine, its language, culture, traditions, and the Ukrainian Orthodox Church. He stressed education to his children, ensuring they both attained university degrees.

He also took great pride, often with a tear in his eye, seeing his grandchildren participate in the Ukrainian community and upholding the values he held so dear. He was filled with joy to see his granddaughter, Tayisa graduate Grade 12 in June 2000, from Balmoral Hall.

His life-long dream of seeing a free and independent Ukraine, as well as his brother, Myhailo were finally realized in 1992.

Heartfelt thanks go to Mr. and Mrs. P. Shawarsky and Mrs. L. Shchudlo for their compassion and concern for our father. Sincere thanks are extended to Dr. Gorski, Concordia 3E staff and especially Marguerite, Carol, Kathy and Dr. Harris of oncology dept., whom he always looked forward to seeing.

It is hard to imagine what life will be like without our father and grandfather. He always had a kind or jovial word to say. Ambrozij was the pillar of strength and unwavering conviction - a modest man who put God, country, and family above any personal interest. He will be missed for all eternity.

Panahyda will be sung 7:00 p.m. Thursday, January 25 at Ukrainian Orthodox Cathedral of St. Mary the Protectress, Burrows and Sinclair. Funeral Liturgy will be celebrated at 9:30 a.m. Friday, January 26 also at the Cathedral with Very Rev. M. Skrumeda, Rt. Rev. W. Sluzar, Rt. Rev. S. Kiciuk and Rev. A. Harkavyi officiating. Interment to follow in Glen Eden Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers donations can be made to: the Ukrainian Insurgent Army - UPA Invalids or to St. Mary the Protectress Church.

Slava Ukrainee! Slava Hyroyam!

KORBAN FUNERAL CHAPEL in care of arrangements.
