2203 Private W Bennett, 2nd Battalion the Manchester Regiment. The battalion deployed to South Africa for the Second Anglo Boer War, sailing on the Bavarian on 16 Mar 1900, and arrived at the Cape on 6 Apr 1900. Along with the 1st Worcestershire, 1st South Staffordshire, and 2nd Royal West Kent, they formed the 17th Brigade under Major General Boyes. They took part in the relief of Wepener 20-24 Apr 1900. In May they were operating between Thabanchu and Senekal. On 4 Jun 1900 they occupied Ficksburg holding it until 20 Jun 1900. Private Bennett died of disease at Bloemfontein on 16 Jun 1900.
