4205 Private A Middleton, 2nd Battalion (Princess Charlotte of Wales's) Royal Berkshire Regiment. The 2nd Battalion was in Cape Colony when the war commenced and was deployed in the Molteno district of the Cape Colony. Although they had been deployed at Stormberg, they were not part of the failed attempt to attack Boer positions in the area on 10 Dec 1899. They were part of the advance to Bloemfontein in Feb-Mar 1900. The battalion took part in the operations for the relief of Wepener about 20-23 Apr, but had no serious fighting. During Lord Roberts' advance towards Pretoria they were chiefly employed guarding the lines of communication. Private Middleton died of enteric fever (typhoid) at Bloemfontein on 25 Jun 1900. He is also commemorated on the Royal Berkshire Regiment Boer War memorial in St Georges Church, St Georges Road, Reading, Berkshire, England (see: https://www.iwm.org.uk/memorials/item/memorial/12817).
