Author, Musician, Model. As a writer and performance artist she was noted for her furious postmodern explorations of sex and consumerism. Her punk rock sensibility led some critics to call her "the Russian Lydia Lunch", but an underlying romanticism informs all her work. Medvedeva was born in Leningrad (now St. Petersburg), and emigrated to the United States at age 16. Tall and stunningly beautiful, she worked as a model in Los Angeles and New York, posing for Playboy and, most notably, for the cover of The Cars' self-titled 1978 debut album. She later savaged the American fashion industry in a book of essays, "Hotel California" (1987). In 1982 Medvedeva married exiled Soviet dissident Eduard Limonov and moved to Paris, where she sang in nightclubs and wrote articles for French journals. She also published two novels, "Mama, I'm In Love With a Thief" (1985) and "My Struggle" (1989). Following her divorce from Limonov, she returned to Russia in 1994 and moved to the forefront of the country's punk scene as singer for the group Korrozia Metalla and with her own band, Tribunal, which released its first album that same year. In her final book, "And They Had Passion" (1999), Medvedeva danced on the grave of the former Soviet Union and reflected on her attempts to re-adjust to life in her homeland. She died in her sleep of an apparent heart attack at 44.
