DOUGLAS GUNNESS DIES SUDDENLY
Douglas Wayne Gunness died suddenly of a heart attack after returning from a three-day trip to Barstow, California where he had supported three local motorcycle riders participating in the Sunland Shamrock Two Days Enduro. Even though all three cycles had failed to function in the intense heat, Doug had been happy to give the young riders the chance to compete.
Doug was born in Clark, South Dakota on February 5, 1923, to Harold and Agnes Gunness. He spent his early years in Barnesville, Minnesota. The family moved to McMinnville Christmas, 1939; and Doug graduated from McMinnville High School in the spring of 1941.
His father founded Gunness Glass and Paint Store and the family, Doug included, operated it as the family business until 1945 when he bought it outright.
He married the former Miss Dorothy Wortman on August 10, 1943; and ten days later reported to San Francisco where he served in the U.S. Navy aboard the USS Argonne, a repair ship for two years.
Doug and Dorothy were great supporters of the McMinnville High School, and Linfield College sports teams--particularly the football teams. Most recently, his business sponsored the Sports Center Wood Dux, a motorcycle club which traveled to many moto-cross events.
He is survived by his wife, Dorothy and brother Tom, both of McMinnville, his father Harold Gunness of Devils Lake and mother Agnes Gunness of McMinnville. Also surviving are five children, and several grandchildren.
A Memorial Fund is being set up in the name of Douglas Gunness for the Yamhill County Historical Society.
