Harold Dugal Gunness aboard the USS Olympia. Photo used with permission of Brian Blake. The USS Olympia (C-6) was in service from 1895 to 1922. Harold lived to the age of 104. He was probably the last living sailor who had served on the Olympia.

Harold Dugal Gunness served aboard the USS Olympia (famous ship of the Spanish American War). He served as a Gunner's Mate. He also served ashore in Northern Russia and took part in the Battles of Archangel and Voloodga.

Harold was the last known American participant of the Polar Bear Expedition, and served with the 339th Infantry Regiment. The Allied intervention in the Russian Civil War persisted from September of 1918 through July of 1919.
