James attended Tabor Home, Doylestown High School, and graduated from Central Bucks High School.
He was in the U.S. Army from 1957 to 1962, which he then worked at the Doylestown National Guards Armory.
For 21 years, he worked at Charles Chips in Montgomeryville and then moved on to working at Salem United Church of Christ in Doylestown as sexton.
