Philip was a true patriot. He joined the army in 1955 and served two years including a tour in Germany as a member of the Army Security Agency. After his tour in the Army, Philip decided to earn his bachelor's degree and entered the education profession as a teacher in Silsbee, Texas. He taught elementary school for several years. Upon receiving his Master's degree in administration from Stephen F. Austin University he was named the principal of Chance- Loeb Elementary school in 1965. Philip was promoted to Assistant Superintendent and Curriculum director in Lumberton Independent School District in 1974. During this time Philip decided to continue his education and earned his Doctorate of Education from McNeese University in 1974. He was named Superintendent of Lumberton Independent School District in 1979 and served in the capacity until 1986.
After his return to Silsbee from his tour in Germany, Philip fell in love with and married Kay Boyett on May 30, 1958 and enjoyed 60 years of marriage. Over the years, Philip and Kay raised a wonderful family consisting of two sons and two daughters, Philip "Red" Allen Jr. [Dr. Shannon Allen], Conly Allen [Brenda Allen], Kristin Allen, and Paige Paul [Ricky Paul].
Philip was highly involved with the Boy Scouts of America and prided himself on his two sons becoming Eagle Scouts. He is survived by is his wife Kay; sons and daughters; sister, Dr. Betty Iles; and five grandchildren, Bryce Allen Nix, Kyle Alan Crocker, Christopher Allen, Haley Allen, and Darby Paul.
His interests included photography, cooking, staying connected with friends via Facebook, shopping on Amazon and spending time with his wife and family at their home in Lumberton or their lake house on Sam Rayburn.
His family and friends will remember him as an honest advocate for children and education. Philip was a man with a quick, sharp wit, brilliant mind and great sense of humor. His biggest part was his generous heart and kind spirit. He loved animals and raised a multitude of cats and dogs affectionately known as his children's other "brothers and sisters".
Visitation for family and friends will be held on Friday, January 25, 2019 from 5:00 pm to 7:00 pm. A memorial service will be held on Saturday, January 26, 2019 at 10 a.m. at Farmer Funeral Home in Silsbee, Texas.
