Enlisted in April of 1861 for two years service at the age of 28 in the 9th New York Infantry(Hawkins Zouaves) and at the time was described as being 5'ft.7.5" in.tall,of a fair complexion,with blue eyes and was employed as a molder at the time.He was wounded in action on April 19,1862 at the Battle of Camden/South Mills,North Carolina,and recovered to serve with the Company until May 20,1863,when they were mustered out of service at New York City,New York.Also served as an Officer in the 1st Regiment of the New York National Guard.
