Was of Scotch descent, but was a cloth merchant in Dublin before coming to America in 1731. After settling in Cumberland Valley, he married Mary Davison, daughter of an Ulsterite who had immigrated around the same time.

His oldest son, Hugh Williamson, was a member of the Continential Congress representing North Carolina. Hugh was a signer of the Constitution.
