2042 Private A Humphries, 1st Battalion (Princess Victoria's) Royal Irish Fusiliers. The Battalion deployed to South Africa for the Second Anglo Boer War, sailing from Alexandria, Egypt on 24 Sep 1899, and arrived at Durban on 12 Oct 1899. They deployed immediately to Ladysmith arriving on 13 Oct 1899 and were sent on to Dundee. They were involved in the attack on Talana Hill outside Dundee on 20 Oct 1899 (17 killed, over 40 wounded), then in the retreat to Ladysmith. Six of the 8 companies of the battalion were part of a force sent out from Ladysmith to secure Nicholson's Nek during the battle of Lombard's Kop on 30 Oct 1899, but were all taken prisoner by the Boers and later released. Two companies had remained in Ladysmith and were there throughout the siege. After the relief of Ladysmith, the 2 companies and a new draft were employed in the Drakensberg defence force, and in Jun 1900 moved up to Newcastle, and were afterwards employed about Van Reenen's Pass. In Nov 1900 these 2 companies were reunited at Bloemfontein with the rest of the battalion who had been prisoners, and remained in Bloemfontein to July 1901. Private Humphries died of disease at Bloemfontein on 30 Apr 1901. He was buried the same day. He is also commemorated on the Royal Irish Fusiliers Boer War memorial at The Mall, Armagh, County Armagh, Northern Ireland (see: http://www.irishwarmemorials.ie/Memorials-Detail?memoId=856).
