Ellen Paine was born to Thomas Paine (Pain) and Phillis Bene (Beney) at Beckley, Sussex, and baptized at All Saints, Beckley on 20 March 1836. She was also known as Eleanor and Nell. To her grandchildren, Ellen was "Grannie Nell".

On 27 Oct 1860, Ellen married Robert Adams at All Saints, Beckley and they had five children who survived to adulthood: William Robert Charles, Eliza Ellen "Nell", Emily Jane, Kate, Alfred, and Adelaide. Two daughters, Catherine and Kate, died as infants. Despite baptisms and marriages in the Established Church, the family's religious bent was Wesleyan.

By 1891, Ellen and Robert had moved just across the county border to a cottage next to Harts Farm on Denge Marsh near Lydd, where Robert died at the age of 52 on 9 May 1891. Their daughter Adelaide also died prematurely, at the age of 39 in 1912, in childbirth. In her 25 year long widowhood Ellen lived in Gordon Terrace in Lydd. She suffered from heart failure in later years, and a cerebral haemorrhage on 22 April 1917 led to her death four days later, on 26 April 1917.

Ellen joined her husband Robert in Lydd Cemetery on 30 April 1917. She was buried with Wesleyan rites, the burial being certified under 43 & 44 Vic. Cap. 41.
