ALICE J. BARYENBRUCH

Alice Baryenbruch passed away on Thursday, October 20, 2022.

Alice was born January 25,1931 on a family farm in the Irish community of Maple Grove, Wisconsin. She was the 7th of 11 children born to Aloysius & Mary (Kirby) Cavanaugh. She and her siblings walked 2 miles to Marquette Grade School in rain and snow until her family moved to Manitowoc, where she attended St.Paul's Catholic Grade School.

Alice graduated in 1948 from Lincoln High School where in her senior year she and a group of female classmates began working at Mirro Aluminum Company as typists. It was at Mirro that Alice met Dick Baryenbruch on the freight elevator when employees of the factory brought items to the 7th floor where Alice worked. Two years later, Dick gave Alice a ring as they drove past Mirro. And so began a new lifelong adventure. Alice and Dick were married March 31,1950 at St. Paul's Catholic Church, Manitowoc followed by a reception for 200 people held at Silver Lake Resort.

Throughout her life, Alice was an avid reader and she encouraged her kids to follow the same path. The Baryenbruch siblings made weekly visits to the Manitowoc Public Library each bringing home their own stack of books. True to form - at Alice's time of death, she had books checked out from the local library.

One of Alice's holiday specialties was sewing Halloween costumes for her grandchildren. She also created an adult nun costume that was SO popular with family AND friends, that after decades of use it was declared officially worn out and had to be retired. Alice and Dick followed the athletic adventures of their children and grandchildren. Alice herself had accomplished athletic prowess of her own. She bowled two 300 games during her many years of league play.

After Dick's retirement, Alice got him hooked on garage sales. As a result, their many friends were on the receiving end of some interesting gifts that were purchased at sales from Door County to Indianapolis and everywhere in between! Alice and Dick's most adventurous vacation was a road trip with Dorothy and Don Bouril on Route 66 to California. And while the scenery was beautiful, Alice was pregnant with their first child Pat, which meant many unexpected stops along the way. Later on, she and Dick would put on many miles visiting their children which included trips to Indianapolis, Raleigh, Sister Bay, Madison & Green Bay-among other destinations. Always a fan of 'fixer upper' stories, in recent years Alice indulged in HGTV favorites The Pickers & Flea Market Flip. In 2013, Alice became a worldwide viral sensation when legendary blogger James Romenesko discovered daughter Barb's Facebook post about her mother's 65th High School Class Reunion. He shared a colorful quote from Alice about the reunion being held at a Manitowoc funeral home. Google "Alice Baryenbruch + 65th reunion" and see for yourself!

Alice was preceded in death by her husband Dick, brother-in-law Danny Baryenbruch; 4 sisters: Rosemary (Bob) VandeCastle, Rita (Jim) Mrotek, Margie (Art) Friedland, June (Jim) Gallagher. 5 brothers: Buddy, Billy (Athalene), Harold (Jane), John (Gail), and an infant brother. Also, many beloved family pets.

Alice is survived by 1 son: Patrick (Laura Ford) Baryenbruch; 3 daughters: Peggy (Don) Carson; Barb Luhring; Beth (Jeff) Anderson. Grandchildren: Jennifer Fix; George (Megan) Kiwada; Grier (Stephanie) Carson; Glen (Miranda) Carson; Holly (Darrin) McClure; Tommy (Grace) Fix; Caitlin Oleson (Adam); Kathleen Baryenbruch (Joe); Elise Anderson (Ben); Katie Anderson; and Jack Anderson. Great Grandchildren: Sayla, Reese, Mirabel, Remy, Coltie, Ella, Oliver, Emerson, August and James. Brother Robert (Luanne) Cavanaugh; and many nieces and nephews. Alice was very proud of the fact that her father, father-in-law, husband, 5 brothers, 6 brothers-in-law and 1 son-in-law all served their country as members of the military.

Alice was an eight year multiple myeloma cancer survivor and had lived her whole life with Essential Tremor. In an effort to assist essential tremor research, she participated in a decades-long study on this disorder. Upon her death, Alice donated brain tissue for further study to the University of Texas Southwestern home of the Essential Tremor Research Foundation.

In lieu of flowers, the family has asked that any donations be made to: Essential Tremor Brain Repository, c/o Daniella Iglesias-Hernandez, UT Southwestern Medical Center, 5323 Harry Hines Blvd., Dallas, TX, 75390-8813

A memorial service to celebrate Alice's life will be held at 2:00 pm on Saturday, November 19, 2022 at St. Francis of Assisi - Marshall location, 1114 S. 21st Street, with Rev. Jason Blahnik officiating. Relatives and friends may greet the family on Saturday, November 19, 2022 at the church from 1:00 pm until the time of service at 2:00 pm.
