Fred was a son of Nathan and Martha Wright Messer. He grew up in Towns County, GA. Fred was a noted Brasstown Wood Carver, having learned the art at the John C. Campbell Folk School in Brasstown, NC.
He and his wife, Hazel Brown Messer, moved to Oklahoma in the late 1930s for a short period before leaving that state for California, where they raised their three boys, Gene, Zane, and Phillip in Kern County. Fred was preceded in death by his parents, a son, Gene Harold Messer, who died in 1954 in Oklahoma from injuries sustained in an automobile accident, and a brother, Lloyd Garland Messer, who died in 1948.
Fred was survived by his wife, Hazel, sons Zane and Phillip, and a sister, Mrs. Mae Messer Williamson of Warne, NC.
