Lila Hampton, our loving mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, and friend, died November 1, 2022 at her home in Murray. She was surrounded by her family as she passed peacefully through the veil. She died from complications after recent hip replacement surgery. She had decided that no matter what the outcome of the surgery, it would be a better alternative than being incapacitated by her failing hip. She could not accept the thought of being grounded and unable to accomplish the various activities she was continually involved with.

She was born on November 5, 1929, one of fifteen children born to Francis Marion and Hazel Fowlks Wood. Born and raised in Salt Lake City, she attended Granite High School. Shortly after, she met a recently discharged Navy seaman returning from WWII and post-war service, Richard (Dick) Hampton (deceased). They were married several months later in a civil ceremony which was later solemnized in the Salt Lake Temple.

They raised four children, Richard (Debra), Linda (Dennis) Green, Don (Valerie), and Barbara (Jim) Larsen. After returning to Murray in 1960, they bought the home that Lila lived in until her passing. At her passing, she had been blessed with 20 grandchildren and 38 great-grandchildren, all of whom she adored. She loved to be surrounded by her family and sponsored many family parties at her home, especially the family Easter egg hunt for all of the children.

Lila was an active member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and loved members of her ward, the Murray 11th Ward. She held many callings, to include ordinance worker in the Jordan River Temple until her health would no longer allow it. In her later years, she looked forward with great anticipation to her Temple Tuesdays, when she would take names to the Temple found during her Family History research. She had a great love for genealogy and looked forward to meeting family members on the other side.

We have so many loving memories of Lila which we will cherish at her passing. She had a wonderful sense of humor which was not readily apparent. She would make a joke and then chuckle in her own cute fashion. She was always working on projects, especially for Christmas, which was her favorite holiday. Every grandchild and great grandchild could count on receiving a present of some variety from Grandma for Christmas. She was always a great listener, especially for family. If any of us had a problem, she was available to provide a willing ear and encouragement to help us through the situation. She always enjoyed talking about various points of the gospel and loved her opportunity to take religion classes and learn more. One of the highlights of her later years was her discussion group of ward members who met to study lessons from the Come Follow Me manual.

She was a great teacher and a fountain of accrued knowledge. She could teach you about canning and sewing, knitting and crocheting, gardening and food storage, cooking and baking. She loved to go for a drive, just being with family and visiting the State. She looked forward to traveling with Linda and Dennis to Logan or Ogden or Fruit Way to shop and see the sights, with Don and Val to see Christmas lights, with Barb and Jim to see the fall leaves turn colors. She had cherished memories of rock hunting with dad and their travel together in Germany, and she loved to reminisce about events and activities from the past. We will truly miss our talks, discussions, and visits with our sweet mom, grandma, and friend, Lila.
