Soldier. Eric Batchelor was a New Zealand soldier who received the Distinguished Conduct Medal twice for his actions during World War II. In July, 1944 Batchelor was awarded his first medal for gallantry for his efforts while fighting within a cabin behind German lines at San Donato. During an assault on Celle, while acting as platoon sergeant, in December that same year, he was recognised for his gallantry and received his second medal. Batchelor was one of just nine commonwealth soldiers to receive the Distinguished Conduct Medal and Bar and he was also the only New Zealander to receive the honour during World War II.
