Ms. Almatha was born in Bamberg, SC on June 11, 1937 to the late Nathaniel Washington and Annie L. McMillan-Washington; and the stepdaughter of the late Olive Dowling-Washington. Ms. Almatha was educated through the Bamberg, SC school system.
During her years of employment, she worked for Top Flight Corp. as a Machine Operator for 35 years and retired in 1999. Ms. Almatha was an awesome seamstress and made clothing for various members of the York County community through avenues of the church, various cleaners, as well as freelance, in addition to her love for sewing, she enjoyed quilting, cooking, being a Foster Mother for Family United Network, going to church, reading, and learning about God, serving others, but most of all she loved spending time with her family. Ms. Almatha was widely known as having a supportive, nurturing spirit as she was always there to lend a hand and assist wherever and whenever needed. She was a member of Friendship Baptist Church where she served as a Deaconess Emeritus, Pastors Aide, President of the Pastor's Committee, Church Tailor, and a Youth Mentor. Momma Searles was known for her fruitcakes at the holiday time, her Church Rice, her coconut cakes, her sweet potato pies, as well as her homemade jellies.
In addition to her children, Clyde and Edith, Ms. Almatha leaves to mourn her loss but cherish her memory: 3 grandchildren, 3 brothers, 2 sisters, church family and a host of other family members and friends.
Ms. Almatha was preceded in death by her parents, stepmother, 7 sisters Deloris Washington, Ella Mae Washington, Annie L. Johnson, Eartha M. Thompson, Ruth Orr, Vertel Romey and Frieda Jimerson and 7 brothers Odell Dowling, Thaddeus Dowling, Lucius Dowling, Booker T. Washington, Solomon Washington, Richard Washington and Nathaniel Washington, Jr.
