Margaret HIATT was born about 1736 in Virginia, British Colonial America, (*note birth yr. estimated from date of her 1st marriage & the birth of her 1st son. Also, 1736 is listed as her birthdate in her IGI Marriage Records). But according to other research, Margaret was born in 1727. Margaret was a daughter of John Hiatt II & his 1st wife, Rachel WILSON Hiatt (1701-1746. John Hiatt II, married as his 2nd wife Margaret, (unsure of her maiden name).


FREDERICK COUNTY VIRGINIA WILL BK.3:242:

"I John Hiatt of County of Hampshear... Virginia...do make...my Last Will...

I give...eldest son George Hiatt...5 shillings

I give...my son John Hiatt...my son William Hiatt...my son Joseph Hiatt (each 5 shillings)

I give...my dau. Catherine Harrel...my dau. Mary Edwards...my dau. Ann Harris...my dau. Margaret Craven (each 5 shillings)....

I give...my loving wife Margaret Hiatt one part of my Estate according to Law.

my will...that my loving wife Margaret Hiatt have the tuition & bringing up my son(s) Evan Hiatt, Jonathan Hiatt, James Hiatt, Timothy Hiatt, & my daughter(s) Martha Hiatt, Ruth Hiat& Sarah Hiatt until...each of them...arrive to age provided she continues in the station of a widow...

I appoint my said loving wife...my Executor. 3Jan1764, John(his mark)Hiatt; proven: 26Oct 1764."


About 1755, in Virginia, Margaret Hiatt married William John Dyer (1732-1758). William Dyer was outside Fort Seybert & killed by the Shawnee Indians led by Chief Kill-Buck. Kercheval in his historic accounts of Virginia History gives several variations of the Fort Seybert Indian Massacre. Just how Margaret Dyer escaped this tragedy with two infant sons is not quite clear. One account states that she secluded herself in huge rocks near the Fort.

"Cravens vs. Lanahan--O.S. 291; N.S. 103--Bill by William, Joseph, James Cravens, Peggy (Cravens) wife of Joseph Snap, children of John Cravens, who died 25 July 1778, intestate [without a will] leaving widow Margaret & 7 children: Mary, Hannah, Robert, William, Joseph, James, & Peggy. Administration was granted to widow & Robert Cravens, brother of John....Robert Cravens...was 14 yrs. old at death of his father [John Cravens] & died 10 Dec 1793, intestate, unmarried & without issue. Dennis [Lanahan] made his Will, giving a legacy to his brother Timothy. Dennis & Margaret were married 20 Mar 1782. William Cravens was born 20 Apr 1764; Joseph 20 May 1769; James 12 Apr 1773; Margaret 26 Aug 1775. Dennis says his nephew came in from Ireland, which caused him to alter his Will... William Cravens was Dennis's apprentice as Mason. James was put into brickmaking at Staunton, but was afterwards taken to Kentucky by a relation & never returned. Administration on the estate of Robert Cravens [John's brother] granted in Rockingham, 27 April 1784, to Hester Cravens, the widow & Benj. Smith 13 Sep 1816.
