Gerald (Jerry) (Jers) Lewis Wallentine
1942 ~ 2008 PARIS, IDAHO - Gerald Lewis Wallentine, 65, passed away on January 12, 2008 after a recent battle with diabetes and heart illness. He was born July 22, 1942 to parents Lewis (Luke) and Ileene Wallentine in Montpelier, Idaho. He grew up and attended school in Paris, Idaho and graduated from Fielding High School in 1960, where he lettered in every sport. Jerry joined the United States Marine Corps in June 1960, serving in Camp Pendleton, California and several overseas locations. One of his greatest enjoyments was being recruited to play for the Marine Corps baseball and basketball teams. During his Marine Corp service, he met and married Betty Wallentine in 1965 (later divorced). Upon his discharge from the Marine Corps, he returned to Bear Lake with Betty where they raised three children, Michael, Victor and Melanie. In 1966, he joined the Union Pacific Railroad were he worked for 37 years as a brakeman and conductor and where he gained the nickname "Jers". "Jers" connected with the youth of the Bear Lake Valley and mentored many, as exemplified by his willingness to start and coach the first Little League Baseball team in Paris. "Jers" was the coach who found no reason why young girls could not play and was the first to allow and encourage girls to play on previously all boys' teams. He enjoyed worldwide travel throughout his life and loved meeting people from other countries and cultures. Jerry was a devoted father and son, and a practical joker who will be missed tremendously by all who loved him, including his 9 lb. furry friend, Panda. He continued his love for sports literally to the end, including his obsession with the Utah Jazz, the team he was watching in his last moments. Jerry is preceded in death by his father, Luke; brother, Russell; and son, Victor. He is survived by his mother, Ileene Rich; son, Michael; and daughter, Melanie. Funeral services will be held in the Paris LDS Chapel in Paris, Idaho on Thursday, January 17, 2008 at 12 noon. Friends may call prior to services from 11 to 11:45 a.m., at the Paris LDS Church, also on Wednesday, January 16, 2008, from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m at Matthews Mortuary in Montpelier, Idaho.
