PARIS -Ileene Peterson Wallentine Rich, 87, passed from this life on Saturday, Nov. 20, 2010, at Jordan Valley Hospital in West Jordan, Utah, after a lengthy battle with heart disease and diabetes.
She was born in St. Charles, Idaho, on May 26, 1923, to Alvin and Bertha Peterson and was the second youngest of 10 children. She attended school in St. Charles, and graduated from Fielding High School in Paris, Idaho. She also spent much of her spare time in her youth assisting her father and being mischievous with her siblings on the farm.
She met Lewis (Luke) Wallentine, they married in 1941, and made their home in Paris; they had two loving sons, Gerald (Jerry) and Russell.
Ileene worked at and later owned the Paris Caf for many years and knew how to make french fries that are often only dreamed about in today's commonly over-scheduled, fastpaced world. After lovingly peeling each potato by hand, she blanched, and then refried them so that they were crisp homemade fries - a real treat enjoyed daily by many Bear Lakers. The love she put into making those fries was surpassed only by her love to eat what someone else had made.
Ileene enjoyed a good feast and, up until the day before she passed, had a hearty appetite, and thought it rather silly to order a six-inch sub when one could order a foot long.
After the passing of her husband, Luke, in 1970, Ileene became more involved in the management of the caf. She learned the bookkeeping and ordering of supplies to keep the caf operating. In the mid-1970's, the wife of caf owner, Ralph Rich passed away. To keep occupied, Ralph often would ask Ileene if he could help cook in the caf. Their time together turned to romance and the two eventually married.
With Ralph, she soon realized her love for golf and travel. She golfed nearly daily with Ralph or her dear friend, Alice Rich, and trotted the globe with Alice or Hilda, moments they all continually relished.
Ileene treasured the close relationship she had with Jerry's family and could often be found closing down shops with her shopping buddy, friend, confidante, and former daughter-in-law, Betty, whom she loved to pal around with, confide in, and "argue" with about who was buying lunch.
In addition, highly prized to her was spending time with her three grandchildren and unconditionally support ing their activities, interests and the essence of who they are and whatever "made them tick," a true gift not taken for granted by any of them.
She was a hip, cool and ac cepting grandmother whose love was never questioned nor in short supply. Moreover Ileene enjoyed a close mother son relationship with Jerry for many years.
Ileene was a hearty Utah Jazz fan, knew who was being traded to what team, and with her recent failing eyesight could be found literally an inch or two away from the TV during game time, hoping to catch a glimpse of a good assist, basket or rebound, jolt ing her arms high with a loud holler when a three-pointer dropped through the net.
In her later years, her dearly adored daytime companion was Panda, a nine-pound poodle/Lhasa Apso mix, who gently yet firmly reminded Ileene of her 4 p.m. medication time, and whom Ileene, enjoyed spoiling without end.
Ileene was preceded in death by her parents and all 10 brothers and sisters, husband, Lewis C. Wallentine, husband, Ralph Rich, sons, Russell and Gerald, stepson, Claire, and grandson, Victor. She is survived by hardly anyone .(well, grandson Michael and granddaughter, Melanie, and former daughter-in-law, Betty).
Ileene was often reticent, yet ever attentive, aware and kind to her fellow life travelers. She gracefully balanced her love for others with her independent spirit, and was a soul with unmatched remarkable strength, fortitude, resilience, heart and true grit - an inevitable inspiration to all who took a moment to truly discover her. Her life lessons to us of strength, determination and continuing to love in the midst of tragedy and difficulty will not be forgotten. She will be missed.
Funeral services will be held Saturday, November 27, 2010, at 10 a.m. at Matthews Mortuary, in Montpelier, Idaho. A viewing will be held Friday, 6 to 8 p.m., and Saturday, 9 to 9:45 a.m., both at Matthews Mortuary. Burial will follow at the Paris Cemetery.
