Date of birth is calculated from information in the Town of Wilson Death Records, Vol 1, page 48, indicating she was 74 years, 11 months, old at the time of her death. The days of her age were not included. It is equally possible that they were not calculated or that they were not known. Days have been omitted in the calculation of her date of birth.
A Betsey Martin first appears in Wilson in the 1870 USA census, living in a household headed by Hart Slocum. The household consists of Hart; his wife, Susan Jane or Janet (Lester) Slocum; Ann Slocum, born about 1812 in USA, VT; and Betsey Martin, born about 1813 in Canada. Ann (Billings) Slocum was Hart's mother. She was the daughter of Nathan Pierce and Sarah (Farnsworth) Billings.
In the 1880 US census, Betsy Martin, age 66, born in Canada, both parents shown as having been born in USA, VT, is living in Wilson with Ann Slocum, age 68, born in USA, VT, both of her parents also shown as having been born in USA, VT. Also in the household is Anna's daughter, Adda Slocum, age 32, born in USA, NY, father born in USA, NY, mother born in USA, VT. Next door are Hart and Susan Slocum and their 6-year-old daughter, Marion.
Betsey Martin has not been identified in either the 1865 or 1875 New York State censuses. Ann Slocum is shown in the 1865 New York State census as a widow living in USA, NY, Niagara, Cambria, with several of her children and grandchildren. She has not been identified in the 1875 New York State census.
One working hypothesis is that Ann Slocum and Betsey Martin were sisters. There is a Betsey Martin, wife of Edward Martin, shown in the
1851 Census of Canada East, Canada West, New Brunswick, and Nova Scotia, living in Canada East (Quebec), Beauharnois County, Hemmingford. It is not known if this is the same Betsey Martin. Further research needs to be done.
The Town of Wilson Death Records show that Betsey was buried in Wilson. At the time of her death, Greenwood was the only operating cemetery in Wilson. The Town's Death Records only show the cemetery, not the specific burial location. At the present time, no known relatives of Betsey's are buried in Greenwood. Most likely, she was buried in a single grave.
