6088 Private A Hunt, 1st Battalion (Sherwood Foresters) Derbyshire Regiment. The battalion deployed to South Africa for the Second Anglo Boer War, sailing from Suez on 28 Nov 1899 and arriving in South Africa about 14 Dec 1899 and was sent to assist Sir W Gatacre, who had just suffered his reverse at Stormberg, deploying to Sterkstroom, and afterwards held Bushmanshoek. In Mar/Apr 1900 they joined the 21st Brigade under General Bruce Hamilton. They were on the right flank of the Army on the advance to Johannesburg and Pretoria and were engaged in the operations which culminated in Prinsloo's surrender. On 11/12 Jun 1900 they fought at the battle of Diamond Hill in the central Transvaal, east of Pretoria. During the latter part of 1900 and early months of 1901 the battalion did much marching. On 29 May 1901 one company was part of a column under Brigadier General Dixon that was attacked at Vlakfontein Farm by 3-400 Boers who overwhelmed the 4 companies of the 7th Battalion Imperial Yeomanry, and a company of infantrymen. Two guns were captured and were turned against another British detachment, but a determined counter-attack by the Derbyshire company recaptured the guns and five companies of infantry forced the burghers to retire. The British losses were heavy (69 killed, 110 wounded and 8 missing), the Derbyshire company losses being 18 killed and about 70 wounded. Private Hunt died of disease at Germiston, Johannesburg on 21 Dec 1901. He is also commemorated on the 1st Battalion (Sherwood Foresters) Nottinghamshire and Derbyshire Regiment Boer War memorial in the Church of St Mary, High Pavement, Nottingham, England (see: https://www.warmemorialsonline.org.uk/memorial/145916/).
