Joan was born in Woolwich in 1917-she is buried with her brother who died in 1941 whilst on active service.
Joan was killed at Sutton, Surrey whilst going to the rescue of the crew of a Stirling III BK809/T bomber which crashed on take-off striking a petrol bowser and burst into flames.The captain and RAF air bomber lost their lives in the crash, while three of the other five crew were injured, including the flight engineer, who later died also. An RNZAF navigator of the Squadron, helping out with harvesting on a nearby farm while on leave, also rushed to the scene to assist, but he and Joan died in the blast when some of the bombs exploded. Two civilians also died, while others were injured. The two New Zealanders are buried at Cambridge.

The following account has been written and provided by Anthony Murphy.........
Section Officer Joan Marjorie Easton, Women's Auxiliary Air Force was stationed at RAF Mepal, Cambridgeshire. The airfield was built in 1942 and occupied by the Stirling Bombers of 75 Squadron in June 1943. Known as 75 (New Zealand) Squadron as it was manned largely by servicemen from that country.
On the night of 8th September 1943, at 21.55, 3 Group were taking off for a raid on a Long-Range Gun Battery at Boulogne, France. However, one of the bombers, Stirling III, BK809T was caught in a slight cross wind and veered sharply to Starboard, in overcorrecting the plane struck a Petrol Bowser and finally came to rest on the far side of the perimeter track between two houses in the residential area of Sutton where it burst into flames.
Joan Easton and a New Zealand RAF Navigator rushed to the scene to assist the civilians of the houses. As they arrived some of the bombs on the aircraft exploded killing both Joan Easton, the Navigator and two civilians, others were injured. The crew of the bomber were also killed.
Joan is buried in Charlton Cemetery, Greenwich, London with her brother, Sergeant, Pilot Eric John Easton, RAF.VR. who died on 30th April 1941 when the Hurricane I Fighter that he was flying, from 52 Operational Training Unit, Bishop's Stortford, fell from altitude and nose dived into the ground at speed. There was insufficient evidence for an investigation but it was noted that he had been on an oxygen test that had probably failed causing him to blackout.
